What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a detailed assessment completed by an Occupational Therapist to better understand how a person’s disability, mental health, or functional challenges impact their everyday life.

The assessment looks at a person’s current abilities, the supports they already have in place, areas where they may need additional assistance, and recommendations that could help improve independence, safety, wellbeing, and overall participation in daily life.

Functional Capacity Assessments are commonly used for:

  • NDIS access requests

  • NDIS plan reassessments and reviews

  • Change of circumstances

  • SIL and SDA applications

  • Support recommendations

  • Funding evidence and reports

At CentreSteps Allied Health, our team provides Functional Capacity Assessments for children, teens and adults across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and surrounding areas.

What Does a Functional Capacity Assessment Involve?

During the assessment, the Occupational Therapist will spend time getting to know the participant, their daily routines, current supports, challenges, strengths, and goals.

This may include discussing or assessing areas such as:

  • Personal care and daily living skills

  • Mobility and getting around safely

  • Emotional regulation and mental health impacts

  • Communication and social participation

  • Household tasks and routines

  • Community access and independence

  • Sensory needs and functional challenges

  • Work, study, volunteering, or meaningful activities

  • Current support networks and informal supports

The assessment process may involve observations, conversations with participants and support networks, review of existing reports, and functional questionnaires where appropriate.

Why Might Someone Need an FCA?

A Functional Capacity Assessment can help provide clear evidence of how a person’s disability impacts their daily functioning and what supports may be reasonable and necessary to help them achieve their goals.

Recommendations may include:

  • Support worker assistance

  • Increased support hours

  • Occupational Therapy supports

  • Allied Health supports

  • Assistive Technology (AT)

  • Home Modifications

  • SIL or SDA recommendations

  • Capacity building supports

  • Emotional regulation supports

  • Safety recommendations

The assessment can also help identify risks, barriers, and support gaps that may impact a participant’s independence, wellbeing, or safety if adequate supports are not in place.

When Can an FCA Be Helpful?

A Functional Capacity Assessment may be helpful if:

  • You are applying for the NDIS

  • You are preparing for an NDIS plan review

  • Your support needs have changed

  • You require additional funding or supports

  • You are exploring housing or SIL options

  • You need evidence to support recommendations

  • You would benefit from clearer understanding of your functional support needs
